See you at the collision!
6th Street Mural
This month The 6th Street Mural is entitled Checks Cashed by artist Bill McMullen who's most recent show was held at HVW8 Art + Design Gallery. The bulk of McMullen's work has been in commercial design, including toys for KidRobot, shoes for Adidas, and most notably being the Beastie Boys' boy when it comes to designing their album covers.
Here, McMullen combines the radical photomontage of Barbara Kruger and John Heartfield, the pop appropriation of Richard Prince and Andy Warhol, and the irreverent cut-and-paste sampling of hip-hop - all with the flavor of someone known for, say, designing Method Man album covers. Ultimately, Checks Cashed compels because of that same contradiction: putting his money where his mouth is, McMullen balances conceptual toughness with advertising's seductive surfaces and the irreverence of urban culture.
We're not sure exactly where the line between commercial iconography and street art is drawn, but it seems to stop traffic on 6th Street. Come on down and discuss over a coctail or two, we'll be waiting...

24/7 Projection featuring Kate Gilmore
Kate Gilmore is sole protagonist in her performative videos as she attempts to conquer self-constructed obstacles. Her videos explore issues of displacement, struggles and female identity with metamorphic depth and formal sophistication. Gilmore's tragicomic displays posit physical situations as metaphor for present-day conflicts and social obstacles. -Margot Norton

Weekdays on the Rooftop
Bands have been literally marching up the stairwells lately and not the kind with batons and whistles. Unique acts like Diego Garcia, who was brought to LA by Standard Sounds for a special performance to help raise awareness for the Pablove Foundation. The Argentinian romantic, formerly the lead singer of Indie band Elefant, enchanted the audience with his lush string arrangements, delicate Spanish guitars and distinctly Latin vocal intonations.
Every Thursday evening Jason Myers and his band, a progressive jazz quartet, with Myers blazing smooth trumpet solos mellows out the 9 to 5ers and poolside tourists after their long days.
DJ David J Bauhaus who played bass for Love and Rockets, and Bauhaus, spins every Tuesday night on the roof playing kicked up versions of songs from artists like Syd Barrett and original compositions from his own abstract instrumental style music.
So leave your day behind and be prepared to experience LA's most eclectic rooftop music scene!

Artillery Art Debates
The Artillery live art debates are back by popular demand...the program was so successful last year that their debaters are ready to put the gloves back on! This year, the issues that really matter are Lowbrow and Highbrow Art with Robert Williams vs Ezrha Jean Black, Ecomony and Creativity with Robert Berman vs Shana Nys Dambrot, Pornography in Art with Zak Smith vs Betty Ann Brown and Project Deitch with Mat Gleason vs Margaret Lazzari.
The line up of debaters are important and active members of the Los Angeles art community: critics, professors and artists. DAILY
24/7 Projection featuring Mika Rottenberg
The question of labor and the exploitation of women's bodies lie at the heart of Rottenberg's humorous video installations. In Mary's Cherries, three female wrestlers perform a series of bodily actions in small claustrophobic chambers on successive floors. Two women rapidly pedal exercise bikes to power a UV light that promotes the growth of red fingernails. Each nail is carefully cut and dropped through a hole in the floor where another laborer massages and rubs it, softening it so that when the fingernail is passed to the next laborer it is easily transformed into a sticky maraschino cherry.

24/7 Projection featuring Kalup Linzy
Kalup Linzy's clever and unique voice lampoons and satirizes various forms of film and television such as Hollywood tearjerkers and soap operas. He deals with highly charged themes such as gender, sexuality, race, class, and popular culture. His takes on these issues are eloquently fused into his delightfully raunchy videos and performances "Conversations Wit De Churen," " Diva in Distress" and "All My Churen." -Whitfield Lovell
