Robert Gober began his career sculpting sinks, a seemingly normal everyday object. Upon closer examination of the sculptures – built from wood, plaster, wire lath, and coated in enough paint to mimic enamel – one would find a lack of faucets and plumbing. The year was 1983 and the AIDS epidemic was exploding. The defunct sinks were a statement on the inability to cleanse oneself from everyday activities. The Heart Is Not a Metaphor, at MoMA, is the first large-scale survey of Robert Gober’s career to take place in the United States. Sobering, haunting, and at times confounding, the exhibition presents over 130 works in a wide range of mediums.

The clown prince of the Beat Cinema scene, Robert Downey, Sr. is being honored by Cinefamily for his satirical films of the '60s and his '70s classics like Putney Swope and Greaser’s Palace. His son, Robert Downey, Jr. will be present on Friday for an intimate career-spanning conversation and viewing of Two Tons of Turquoise to Taos Tonight. The celebration continues through the weekend.
