Steve Jobs’ death marked the end of an era at Apple while Snapchat launched and IBM’s Watson computer became a Jeopardy champ. The U.S. executed a daring raid to kill Osama bin Laden and a rare 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked New York City.
Novak Djokovic dominated tennis, winning three of the four Grand Slam titles and earning the world No. 1 spot. Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia was the talk of the Cannes Film Festival and Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life captivated arthouses. We’re still quoting Bridesmaids to this day. In higher culture, conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s groundbreaking performances of Mahler’s symphonies drew international acclaim, and Zaha Hadid’s Guangzhou Opera House opened in China.
