Things To See This Week

NEW YORK

Richard Prince's New Portraits at Gagosian Gallery does three primary things: 1. brings the digital spaces that we all live in into physical form for closer examination, 2. questions the ownership of images and copyright law (but when doesn't Prince do that?), 3. bluntly puts our relationships and online accessibility to all types of people in clear view. To create the works: Prince trolls Instagram for images, comments on those images, takes a screenshot, and then crops and prints them. Oh, and the canvases are rumored to be selling for 40-100K.

His Instagram can be found here.

LOS ANGELES

The work of Lara Plageman morphs, like the landscapes she shoots, between photography and sculpture. For the second installment of Response, Plageman shifted her gaze from land to sea. She visited the most popular scenic destinations on the California coast, places she regards as object-like themselves. A scene is first photographed, then sculpted and collaged into a tabletop assemblage, and then re-photographed. The final product lingers between illusory and tangible.

Until November 9, 2014
Hours: Thur-Sun 12-6
De Soto Gallery
1350 Abbot Kinney Blvd.
Venice, CA 90291

MIAMI

Rafael Ferrer's Artforhum neon

The inaugural exhibition at David Castillo Gallery's Miami Beach location, Amerika presents a narrative in which abstraction and identity within and between pieces modify one another. This is the point of discovery: take Rafael Ferrer's Artforhum neon for example, whose typeface creates a new visual language by playing on the well-known magazine.

Until November 15, 2014
Hours: Tue– Sat 12-8
David Castillo Gallery
420 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, Florida 33139
