Duty Engineer
Job Purpose:
A Duty Engineer oversees the operation and maintenance of technical systems in a facility. Responsibilities include troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and swift response to any mechanical or electrical issues. Responsible for the efficient day-to-day operations, maintenance and repair of all technical systems within the hotel. Ensures the continuous generation of heat, light, power, ventilation and air-conditioning, steam and water supply in the entire hotel and its premises. Works closely with the Director, Engineering to carry out other responsibilities assigned to him in accordance with the established maintenance program and operation schedule to perform a smooth operation of the Engineering Department.
Basic Function:
- Determine the root cause of technical issues and provide solutions to ensure smooth operation of the facility
- Monitor and maintain all equipment and systems to ensure they are operating efficiently and effectively
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans and schedules for all equipment and systems
- Manage and supervise a team of technicians and contractors to carry out maintenance and repair work
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and procedures
- Provide technical support and guidance to other departments and stakeholders
- Prepare reports and documentation on maintenance activities, equipment performance, and budget utilization
- Stay up-to-date with new technologies and industry trends to identify opportunities for improvement and optimize processes and systems
Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational
• Supervises employees in his section for attendance at work and quality
of job performance.
• Ensures the efficient, economical and sound operation of equipment under
his jurisdiction, i.e. Boiler, Chiller, Emergency Generators, Fire Pumps,
Kitchen, Refrigeration, HVAC/Laundry and the auxiliaries of these,
etc.
• Ensures immediate provision of services necessary to guests and other
operating departments.
• Keep updates of daily events, especially on Banquets and Guestroom
status, giving emphasis to VIP's.
• Coordinates daily with Housekeeping and Front Office for the readiness
of the guest rooms.
• Ensures coordination with other operating departments in the
implementation of repair and maintenance schedule.
• Conducts daily briefings of his staff with emphasis on requirements of
special functions and events and preparation of rooms for VIP's.
• Performs daily rounds of inspection in the entire building, giving
particular attention to defective or deficient life safety features and
observes closely the condition of all operating facilities and equipment.
• Ensures the immediate replacement of busted lights.
• Ensures that all standby units are readily available for operation.
• Conducts daily briefings of his associates with special emphasis on the
Basic of the Day and events of the day.
• Reports immediately to his superior all defects and deficiencies noticed
during inspection and commence the immediate rectification without delay.
• Ensures that there is no backlog in repair and maintenance activities
scheduled within the day.
• Controls closely the daily consumption of utilities and immediate rectification
if abnormalities are encountered.
• Reports the completion of all projects and work assignments.
• Ensures cleanliness and sanitation at the workplace.
• Keeps himself updated on all projects or activity status within the
department.
• Follows up strictly work completion of previous shift.
• Liaises with the Duty Manager.
• Inspects finished jobs and ensures that the quality is highly acceptable
to modern hotel standards.
• Ensures close supervision to staff especially in the implementation of
special jobs during evening and overnight shifts.
• Provides close supervision to staff especially during evening and

• Maintains logbook of operations and activities with accurate time and
details during his shifts.
• Allocates work effectively.
• Ensures daily inspection of all firefighting and safety equipment.
• Sees to it that all his associates attend to and execute all the
complaints/calls and job requests from other departments pertaining to his area
of concern.
• Implements preventive maintenance programs, energy conservation
programs, safety programs, environmental and pollution control programs of the
hotel.
• Keeps a close watch on spare parts/supplies required and advises the
Assistant Chief Engineer beforehand to reorder in order to have at any time the
expected replacement parts/supplies at hand.
• Submits weekly accomplishment reports and monthly reports of the status
of all equipment.
• Observes all safety measures and work procedures in all works assigned
to his trades and contractors.
• Ensures that all assigned works are completed according to schedule and
priority.
• Responds immediately to any emergency call and acts as a Fire Fighting
Team Leader in the event of fire or other emergencies.
• Coordinates with other supervisors as far as materials requisition and
stock level of spare parts are concerned.
• Responds and makes himself available for any call by his superiors
during emergencies, troubles or calamities. Stays in the hotel as standby force
to aid in emergencies.
• Follows all other instructions, rules and regulations that may be
issued.
• Performs any other work and related functions as may be assigned by the
Assistant Chief Engineer and the Director of Engineering to accomplish a smooth
operation and maintenance of the hotel.
Maintenance
• Implements strictly the preventive maintenance of all equipment and
machineries including the auxiliaries within his jurisdiction according to the
hotel standards and the manufacturer's recommendation.
• Maintains effectively water treatment of utilities within the prescribed
parameters.
• Maintains ample amount of fuels, spare parts, materials and supplies
necessary to carry out an efficient and effective day-to-day operation. Follows
up deliveries.
• Keeps data and updates records of all operating equipment within the
scope.
• Conducts technical skills training of the staff.
• Keeps himself updated on the new and advance technical developments.
• Ensures regular cleaning of boiler exhaust ducts, kitchen hoods, grease
traps, AHU's and other related equipment.
• Keeps himself updated and knowledgeable on the Mechanical, Electrical,
Building and Fire Codes of the Philippines.
Accountabilities:
• Establishes effective Preventive Maintenance System of all electrical and
electronics equipment through effective scheduling and strict compliance of
standards in the implementation.
• Keep himself updated and knowledgeable on the Mechanical, Electrical,
Fire, and Building Codes of the Philippines and other government regulations.
• Keeps himself updated on the new and advance technical developments.
Life Safety
• Supervise closely and implement strictly all applicable rules of safety
on the workplace.
• Reports to the Director of Engineering any abnormal conditions noticed
at any time with Life Safety-related equipment or installations.
• Ensures safety, orderliness and cleanliness in the workplace.
• Ensures daily inspection of firefighting and safety equipment.
• Implements strictly the monthly inspection report of all safety and
firefighting equipment and submits corresponding inspection reports and
efficient record filing.
• Ensures the immediate rectification of deficient firefighting and safety
equipment without delay.
• Acts as a Fire Fighting Team Leader in the event of fire or other
emergencies.
Employee Handling
• Demonstrates good leadership skills and motivation of his subordinates.
• Organizes and demonstrates harmonious relationship of his team and other
sections.
• Supervises the punctual attendance of work of all Engineering general
associates.
• Allocates work accordingly.
• Administers duty rosters and work shifts.
• Provides supervision and training to key associates.
• Ensures staff compliance of the house rules especially on proper
grooming, wearing of correct and complete uniform and wearing of name tags at
all times.
• Demonstrates good leadership skills and motivation of subordinates.
• Participates actively in the creation of an efficient and professional
Engineering team.
• Orients the staff and actively promotes care and commitment to service,
brotherhood, sense of belonging, flexibility, and the objectives of the hotel.
• Supervises strict adherence to safety rules by all general associates.
• Ensures high standard of job or work quality of all Engineering general
associates with respect to their job knowledge and skills.
• Resolves effectively and immediately all problems referred.
Occasional Duties
• Attends Engineering operational meetings regularly.
• Submits reports on utilities monthly consumption and work
accomplishments weekly.
• Performs duties outside the scope of his position that may be assigned
especially in case of emergency, if so called upon.
• Ensures cleanliness and orderliness of the workplace and other areas of
responsibility.
Other
• Performs other duties as assigned to meet the business need
Physical Requirements:
- Duty engineer should have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role is required.
- Strong technical and analytical skills are required to evaluate and troubleshoot technical problems.
- Excellent communication skills to coordinate with different teams and stakeholders.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of industry regulations and standards related to the job is a must.
- Proficiency in using relevant software and tools to perform job duties.
- Availability to work on a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays if required.
