One of Downtown Los Angeles' most revered summer traditions, the Psomas Paper Yacht Challenge, is happening this very afternoon. Held at City National Plaza, directly across the street from The Standard, Downtown LA, entrants tape and glue pieces of paper together in the effort to create a craft that can speed across the plaza's “Double Ascension” sculpture fountain. Submissions must be made using 20 lb bond paper and adhesives are permitted at the joints only, no waterproofing is allowed. One of last year's finalists placed using a piece of paper held together with band-aids and stickers.
Entrance is $35 for individuals and $50 for companies, with proceeds benefitting the Metro Charter Elementary School, a new facility that will open in Downtown later this fall. Registration begins today at 4:30pm and the race starts at 5:30pm. For full rules and registration details, click here.
