Q&A: Chato Studio Talks Dogs & Nostalgia

Drop by The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon for our pop-up activation with Chato Studio, whose new collab with New Year brings color (and canine style) to The Parlor. We caught up with Wachana Chars, the visionary behind Chato Studio, who shared her deep love for her pets and what inspires her.
Founded by Wachana Charoensomsamai in 2016, Chato Studio is where legacy meets limitless creativity. Inspired by her family’s bag factory and her father’s favorite word, "Chato," meaning castle in French, Wachana crafts a world of fashion-forward, lightweight pieces that are as practical as they are chic. From bags to jewelry, eyewear, and beyond, Chato Studio fuels women with the vibrant energy to break free from the everyday.
Since you launched Chato Studio, what’s been your most exciting moment?

It's always an exciting situation for me every time I have a new launch. I always do what it takes to make the best collection and always hope for the best when the collection is presented. But if I had to rank it, it would be my resin Bamba collection that I created with the jewelry designer for my dancing water exhibition. It's an art piece and only produced one each for a design. We developed it for such a long time, and I had so much fun creating bags as art pieces using resin material.

Of all the pieces you’ve created what’s the most personal or important to you?

I love the Gigi voyage collection as I need to source material from local artisans from all around the country. Such as Agave Sisalana artisan from Chonburi, bamboo straw artisan from Nakorn Patom, and recycled silk yarn from Chiangmai under the Queen Sirikit project and use it to make modern and very cutesy bags from my collection called Gigi.

How has Bangkok's vibrant culture shaped your creative process and influenced your collections?

Bangkok is such a culture creative city full of new excitement. You can find a very traditional and historical golden dome temple with skyrocket buildings standing next to each other. And I love everything about that. I love the dynamic mess mixed between modern lifestyle and cultural heritage. When it comes to design, I take inspiration from the word ‘balance.’ So, these mixes of contrast of the city just gives me sense of balance and harmony in such a unique way.

Walk us through your creative process when designing this new collection, in partnership with New Year, inspired by your beloved dogs and childhood memories. Could you share how these elements are woven into the tote bags, hair accessories, keychains and every other piece in this collection?

This Chato x Newyear Collection, I just want to let our inner child that we have kept deep down inside us for so long out and have fun with it. I just want to bring everyone back to their childhood memory of happiness as somehow, we lost it when we grew up. I met New Year when I visited her Wednesday character exhibition. She told me about Wednesday Dachshund dog character as an introvert shy dog. That's when I think I want to introduce Wednesday to my passed-away dog Lufy. He is an extrovert, happy, and confident dog. I said to New Year, "It would be fun if we let them be friends! It could be the perfect balance." And from that the second character is developed. The products name of the collection starts with happy words. Like the tote is called the happy tote with the embroidery “HAPPY HOUR EVERYDAY” phase as I would like this collection to heal hearts and bring back happiness into people's busy lives. From the tote, it expands into every day’s not so essential but “very happy to have it” items like the scrunchie, hair claw, and pet accessories.

In this exciting collaboration between Chato Studio and New Year Design, how do you merge the distinctive elements of Chato with New Year unique illustration style?

I have to balance between happy cartoon character and fashion statement piece. It's a challenge that we want to make happy fashionable items. But I chose the stripe pattern and cute fluffy embroidery technique to incorporate with the bag turning it into stylish summer tote with some cute doll charms to decorate your own bag your way. Not only stripes, but I also use gingham pattern to make sure the dog scarf looks as happy as their owner's hair scarf. Every item in the collection I'm sure will make us feel fun and happy somehow. The illustration will also appear through embossed leather inside the bag which represents our leather expertise of our brand.

This collection embraces nostalgia. What makes you nostalgic?

Music and scent always bring back memories. I love Carpenters' songs as they remind me of when the time, I sing this song along with my dad when we all had a road trip together.

As a globetrotting designer, what are your top five essentials for staying balanced, focused and inspired while traveling?

1. Keep traveling. It brings you new inspiration. Take yourself out of your comfort zone and give yourself free spirit sense.
2. You are what you eat. You can only create the best thing when your body is full of energy. It's also a sign of self-love too!
3. Meditation. I love to meditate once in a while to stay calm and keep my mind blank space so that something new can fill in.
4. Health is Wealth. I exercise sometimes to release stress and keep my back pain away.
5. Gratitude. I always remind myself how lucky I am to get this far. I believe you can be inspiring when you are joyful.

What made The Standard your choice for the official launch of this collection?

Because The Standard Bangkok is a pet friendly upscaled hotel which shares the same personality of happiness, cheerfulness, and creativity that my collection is. I want people to feel youth again with the vibe and enjoy the happy moment with their beloved pets

Which aspects, elements or characters of The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon resonate to this collection as your choice of Chato x New Year’s campaign shooting venue?

I love the Standard Hotel setting of cool creative summer with cheerful and young at heart characteristic. It gives my shooting a brighter mood but remaining luxurious.

Who’s your current muse?

My muses are Mary Quant and Jane Birkin. I love that they are fashion innovators and trend setters in such a positive freedom way. They push boundaries of women’s fashion and challenge the convention with creativity.
