The Standard Soundtrack to 2009

The year is 2009. Here's how it sounded at The Standard...

2009 marked the end of the noughties and the beginning of a new chapter at The Standard: Our dazzler on The High Line announced itself as a NYC icon and the rest is late-night legend. Barack Obama’s historic inauguration was viewed by millions and Twitter (launched a few years earlier) went fully mainstream. You probably learned what a hashtag was in 2009! You might have taken your first Uber. Crypto was becoming a thing.

Michael Jackson’s sudden passing in June shocked the world while The Hangover made waves at the box office. The H1N1 outbreak foretold a bigger, more disruptive pandemic to come—while the world kept reeling from the 2008 financial crisis. An expenses scandal was the talk of Parliament in the U.K. and Iceland’s government collapsed amid global instability. Meanwhile, 320 miles above the Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope got an upgrade allowing it to capture shots of distant galaxies.

Speaking of distant galaxies, Alexander McQueen’s “armadillo shoe” seemed to land from outer space. All the while, we were partying it up in L.A., Miami and NYC.
