Standard Talks

Fashion Media’s Next Act

The days of gatekeeping in fashion are over!

For our fall edition of Standard Talks, we collaborated with Market Appointment Live to host a panel discussion between Shelcy Joseph (fashion journalist, content creator, and founder of Market Appointment), Marjon Carlos (podcast host, journalist and brand consultant), Alyssa Vingan (writer, editor and former EIC of Fashionista and NYLON) and Devine Blacksher (fashion editor).

These icons spilled thought-provoking observations on the new wave of industry creatives and unique mediums that are collectively challenging legacy media as we know it. No topic was off the table, including industry pay, their clickbait pet peeves, getting access to A-list celebrities, and of course, a rapid-fire round of fuck-marry-kill, featuring fashion’s top outlets.

Subscribe to Market Appointment for more insights on industry trends, and scroll for our favorite moments from the conversation:

“[NYLON and Teen Vogue] were my window into culture outside of my little Virginia Beach bubble. Other than surf shops, there wasn't a ton of [fashion media] for me, so that's how I started to learn.”– Alyssa Vingan

“We should be more open to critique – critique doesn't mean critical or negative, it means if you are in art class, you get a critique from your class and from your teacher. That's how you improve as an artist.” – Marjon Carlos

"Have fun with fashion again. Let's style, not just put someone in a dress and say that's styling because it's not. We need to be more creative." – Devine Blacksher
