The Standard invites you to a panel discussion exploring the intersection of material storytelling and social identities. Join us at The Standard, East Village for an evening of conversation featuring Sanford Biggers (MASSIMODECARLO and Marianne Boesky Gallery) and Tschabalala Self (Pilar Corrias) to celebrate Frieze New York 2023.
Moderator: Matthew Capasso, Co-Host of Art Smack and Founder of M Artists Management
Matthew Capasso is an art market professional and co-host of the Art Smack Podcast with Jerry Gogosian. His career includes positions at Christie's, Fairchain, Gurr Johns, and Goldman Sachs. Matthew is the founder of M Artist Management, a boutique agency that provides financial management services for artists and galleries. He holds a BS from Rutgers University and an MBA from SDA Bocconi.
Panelists:
Sanford Biggers’ work is an interplay of narrative, perspective, and history that speaks to current social, political, and economic happenings while examining the contexts that bore them. Sanford Biggers (b. 1970) was raised in Los Angeles and currently lives and works in New York City. Biggers has been honored for his work with awards and fellowships and was an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at Columbia University School of the Arts from 2009-2019.
Through a commission from the Art Production Fund, Biggers presented, Oracle, a
monumental bronze sculpture and multimedia public art installation at
Rockefeller Center in New York City in 2021. Oracle traveled to the Hammer
Museum, Los Angeles, CA on March
26, 2023 and is currently on view until March 24, 2024. Biggers’ work is
held in the collections of numerous public institutions including the
Smithsonian, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art,
Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles
County Museum of Contemporary Art, National Museum of African American
History and Culture, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, The Bronx Museum of the
Arts, among others.
Tschabalala Self (b.1990 Harlem, USA) lives and works in the New York tri-state. Self is an artist and builds a singular style from the syncretic use of both painting and printmaking to explore ideas surrounding the black body. She constructs depictions of predominantly women using a combination of sewn, printed, and painted materials, traversing different artistic and craft traditions. The formal and conceptual aspects of Self’s work seek to expand her critical inquiry into selfhood and human flourishing. Recent solo exhibitions and performances include Le Consortium, Dijon (2022); Performa 2021 Biennial, New York City (2021); Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore (2021); ICA, Boston (2020); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Art Omi, Ghent (2019); Frye Art Museum, Seattle (2019) and Yuz Museum, Shanghai (2018).
