Kicking off tomorrow in downtown Manhattan, IDEAS CITY is a four-day festival started by The New Museum that explores the future of urban living. It includes conferences, workshops, an innovative StreetFest taking over the Bowery neighborhood, and more than one hundred independent projects and public events. This year's theme is Untapped Capital — under-recognized and underutilized resources that can be harnessed as catalysts for change.

It's no secret that we as a society are wasteful. What's more than a little alarming however is what exactly we define as waste. What if all waste was redefined as Untapped Capital, and the concept of waste was banished from our vocabulary? Is that possible? A panel will discuss.

In 1979, Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the roof of the White House. A largely symbolic act, they were taken down in 1986 during the Reagan presidency. In A Road Not Taken, filmmakers Hemauer and Keller travel back in time and interview those involved in the decisions regarding these panels.

We love a nice stroll down the Bowery as much as the next flâneur, but when Art Production Fund and the New Museum team up with a cackle of artists to tag the storefronts' shutters, we're the first on the scene. After Hours: Murals on the Bowery is both a destination and an unexpected art encounter for the passerby, showcasing the work of Derrick Adams, Ellen Berkenbilt, Alex Israel, Wendy White, and Adam Pendleton.

You've seen his first video, Civilization, in the elevators at The Standard, High Line, and you might have even seen the second of the trilogy, Evolution, when it premiered in 2011 at The Standard Miami during Art Basel. Now you can see the final work in Marco Brambilla's "Meglaplex Trilogy," called Creation. Using hundreds of film clips Brambilla illustrates human history from the Big Bang to scenes of apocalyptic destruction in an endlessly repeating cycle. A live score will accompany the 3-D video for this showing at Basilica of St Patrick’s Old Cathedral.

You must go inside to go outside at this park. Trailer Park is a portable, natural public park housed inside a fourteen-foot mobile trailer. The interior is fully planted and boasts hand-laid brick, wooden benches, a stone waterfall and fishpond. The plants are native to the state of New York and include mosses, succulents, grasses, miniature trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.

StreetFest takes place around the Bowery and in Sara D. Roosevelt Park.
“Change of State” is a site-specific projection on the façade of the New Museum. Curated and produced by Nuit Blanche New York (NBNY), the project continues a tradition that began with “Let Us Make Cake” by Daniel Arsham in 2011 during the inaugural Festival of Ideas for the New City.
