The Standard Soundtrack to 2002

The year is 2002. Here's how it sounded at The Standard...
Some of our *younger* guests might not remember 2002 but trust us, it was a vibe. Halle Berry made history as the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress—her role in Monster’s Ball demands a rewatch. (And her Eli Saab gown at the ceremony was an all-time classic.) Actually, it was a great year for cinema in general: City of God by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, Talk to Her by Pedro Almodóvar and Y Tu Mamá También broke new ground in cinemas. After a minor shoplifting scandal, Winona Ryder posed for a major magazine cover wearing a “FREE WINONA” tee, unlocking even greater icon status. In tennis, Serena Williams won her first French Open title, defeating her sister Venus in the final. Japan and South Korea co-hosted the first World Cup in Asia, and the Euro became the official currency in Europe.

But most importantly, The Standard, DTLA made its debut. Our second hotel transformed L.A.'s after work scene and helped make downtown a true destination. Rooftop pool parties and slick guest rooms perfectly complemented our outpost in Hollywood. All year, were doing our thing and doing it fabulously, if we do say so ourselves.

Here are some of the songs that defined the year.
