Friday, June 7th started out as a normal day in Los Angeles. The sun was shining and everyone was gearing up for a relaxing weekend. A little past noon that Friday, shots were fired in West Los Angeles and everything changed. A young man went on a shooting rampage through Santa Monica, shooting at random cars, packed buses, and at bystanders on the Santa Monica College campus, where LA's KCRW radio station is located. He left 5 dead and several injured. One of the victims, Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, was fatally shot while driving and his daughter, Marcela, 26, was killed in the resulting accident. For 22 years, Carlos Navarro Franco tended the grounds of Santa Monica College. His youngest daughter, Marcela was studying psychology and that Friday her father was driving her to the campus to buy books for class.
This Wednesday, June 19, The Standard, Hollywood will be presenting a very special Desert Nights where all the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Carlos Navarro Franco Memorial Fund. This week's line-up, curated by KCRW DJ Valida, includes Fire at Sea, Matt Ellis, and Two for the Road.
For those who can't make it to Desert Nights, you can still donate to the Carlos Navarro Franco Memorial Fund by clicking here.
