Before he transports the whole Penthouse, Juke Ross and Annie O caught up about his upbringing in Guyana, what inspired “Colour Me,” and what we can expect from his debut EP.

ANNIE O: Where are you based?
JUKE ROSS: Williamsburg, NY.
Tell me about growing up in Guyana.
It’s in many ways like growing up on a Caribbean island—the weather is similar and the atmosphere is capable of being both vibrant and mellow.
How much does Guyana influence your music?
Mostly lyrical. Old Guyanese, Caribbean folk, and calypso music are great at storytelling in a more fun way.
Your single “Colour Me” is so beautiful. Tell us about the inspiration for it and when you wrote it.
It was such a different time. I was sad and busy, but somehow, I managed to pause and write with a friend this immediate beautiful thing. I was relieved to be honest, and I was completely convinced I should pursue music thereafter.
Tell us about currently working in the studio for your debut release.
It’s been a lot of fun working with all the skilled people I've had the chance to work with. At the end, it’s all about making music I’m proud of and it’s been a great start.
Is there an album in the works? What are you most excited to share with your fans?
There’s always an album in the works. I’m still striving with mine, working on some ideas. I get to share some new music with the upcoming EP, but its taking the songs on the road that I'm most excited about.
Are there any tracks by other artists you currently have on repeat?
I recently discovered Leonard Cohen (very late) and am now exploring his repertoire. “Dance Me to the End of Love” has been on repeat for a month now. Clarity and poetic writing really speaks to me.
If Juke Ross had a superpower, what would it be?
To fly. Seems so cliché, but it’s always been fascinating. If that superpower never comes, however, I’ll be fine sky diving and bungee jumping.

Stripped down and raw, just the way I wrote the music.
