The creative process can be an elusive thing. Artist Hassan Rahim just finished installing his piece for The Box at The Standard, Hollywood, entitled Pendulums, and walks us through some of his inspirations.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini You'll find a lot of his work shown as images in my collages. His are some of the most amazing sculptures ever created, and with great emotion.
Sonic Youth - SYR5 I listened to this album while creating the works for this installation. It's the perfect amount of darkness and energy for late night work sessions.
Ettore Sotsass One of the founding fathers of the Memphis design movement and aesthetic, his rational and irrational use of shape, color and patterns is impeccable.
Fraktur A classic font created in the 16th century, in the same era as some of Bernini's work. Good design lasts forever.
1973 BMW 3.0 CSL "Batmobile" My dream car
The final product, Pendulums by Hassan Rahim, is a visual and emotional experiment on intimacy and violence. The tense energy within this Box installation is a further evolution on the concepts of previous works with different executions. Conceptually, I aimed to appropriate classical imagery and intentionally lessen its value through both symbolism and actual technique; images are found, flattened, cut out, printed and pasted on paper, and visually "broken".
Hassan Rahim's installation, Pendulums, will be on display in The Box at The Standard, Hollywood through the end of May. An artist reception celebrating the installation will be held tonight, April 25, 2013 at 8pm.
