Fiona takes the stage
Standard Sounds invited Fiona Apple up to The Top of The Standard last night to celebrate the release of her latest elaborately titled album, "The Idler Wheel is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do," which dropped today on iTunes. The nostalgic crowd got everything they came for—she sang all her hits! She did the hair-strangle thing! She gyrated on the piano!—as well as an epically delayed start time and some trademark commentary between tunes ...
Storm clouds of angst still permeate her magnetic presence
• "Everybody who works here, you must have telescopes and look out the window all day," she said as she gazed out over Midtown. "All I want to do right now is get a pair of binoculars and look into all these windows."
• "Just keep taking pics," she snapped (as politely as possible) to the sea of flashing cellphones. "No really. I might have a seizure, but hopefully not tonight."
After a beautifully angst-ridden set—her voice seems to have only gotten more powerful
with age—she offered us some advice: "Get some fucking telescopes in here!"
