Hunza G Lands on the White Isle

Hunza G lands in Ibiza. The cult heritage-inspired swimwear with its signature crinkle fabrication is now exclusively available at The Standard, Ibiza until 12 August.
Ahead of Friday night's dinner to celebrate Hunza G's pop-up at The Standard, Ibiza, we chatted with Creative Director Georgiana Huddart on all things summer, swim & style...

When you think of Ibiza, is there a particular beachside/poolside look that comes to mind?

Yes it’s a really stylish authentic version of slightly bohemian taste and style. I love the washed denim, floaty silk, there is a lot of vintage on the island and like incredible vintage, not average vintage. I like to think of the Rolling Stones here in the '70s. So it’s a silky camisole over a black Hunza costume, with a basket for a bag and some flats shoes…. Lots of gold jewellery.

Nostalgia is a key ingredient in your design approach. What are you feeling nostalgic for at the moment?

The '90s analog way of living. Everyone watching things in unison and chatting about it. I loved the way that was unifying and now we only really get that real-time watching all together with the World Cup and sports. We just launched a backgammon board that looks like a Polly Pocket — so yep, very much living in the 90s at the moment.

Tell us how this pop-up at The Standard came to be.

I have stayed here a lot when we have done shoots in Ibiza and always loved it so it just felt like a great match in terms of experience the customers here get and our brand. I would never do pop-ups with partners I didn’t respect and think had created a good brand themselves.

Let’s say you’re spending the day on the beach in Ibiza. What’s in your tote bag?
Lip balm from Rhode or Nars, Super Goop sunscreen, Hunza G sunglasses pouch with Prada glasses, headphones, Hunza G, Smythson notepad, book, Hunza G towel, Hunza G hat.

How do you incorporate Hunza’s legacy as a heritage brand into today’s Hunza G designs?
We always have referenced it with some high cuts and bright colours, but the offering is larger and more democratic now. I wanted to design collections where you could really imagine a wide variety of women feeling they could find a perfect piece for them. But the heritage is key to us as we were the first brand to use the crinkle and we have had some amazingly iconic moments. We can have real fun with the heritage.

Your vision for Hunza G is to “make women feel great.” Tell us about your One Size Fit mantra.
The one size mantra is simply that the way the fabric is constructed gives it this incredible stretch and it’s tubular. The key is not just that it’s one size - it’s that it’s super flattering and one size, so it does two jobs! Women go from being sceptical when they see it on the hanger to then obsessed once they try it on and it makes them feel amazing.

When you’re designing, what’s on your current playlist?
A real mix. At the moment listening to a lot of the '90s - the stuff I grew up with. The Fugees, Ian Brown etc.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received about fashion or design?
Ummmm hard one. I think that if you have a brand you have to love and wear the product- that’s just my personal view and a few people have said that. If it’s authentic it gives something extra and they tend to be the most successful.

Is there a swimwear trend you’re tired of seeing?
Not really - I don’t really look at trends that much. I go off colours after seeing them too much. Currently, my favourites are bubblegum pink, blue and black.

After Ibiza, where are you off to next?
Tuscany with my family which I can’t wait for!
