Annie O, our East Village music maven, brings the best international up-and-coming acts to The Standard, East Village's Penthouse for The Annie O Music Series.
On Friday, March 10th, Annie O hosts New York's own B.Miles alongside Linying. The SoCal transplant once locked herself in a Dumbo storage space with her production team to record her first album, Twenty Fifteen, which proved to be worth it after the record picked up some serious Internet buzz. Based off of her new single,"Running," her sophomore album (out March 17th) is shaping up to be just as addictive. Get to know B.Miles before she takes the stage in her interview with Annie O.

ANNIE O: Your new song "Running" is so good that it's addictive. Tell us a little bit about when you wrote it and what it's about.
B.MILES: I wrote it in Miami with Eric Nizgretsky of Loose Buttons. We were joking about the fact that I had been single for so long. He had this melody on loop at the time and the lyrics catered themselves to our conversation about wanting someone to want you in a romantic way.
You're about to release your self titled sophomore album March 17. After the success of Twenty Fifteen, what about this time around is familiar and what have you done differently?
In terms of familiarity, we released three singles from each EP. But other than that, I think this is an entirely new rollercoaster. Releasing music is a bit like Russian roulette—you never know how people will take to it.
Tell us about teaming up with Brookyn-based writing duo Noise Club. What was the process like and how did you meet?
Noise Club really helped in crafting the birth of B.Miles. Eric and I have been good friends with Chris & Rob for years and decided to lock ourselves in a storage unit in Dumbo, Brooklyn to record Twenty Fifteen. We've spent so much time together at this point that I honestly feel most comfortable recording in their studio.
How and when are you most inspired to write a song?
It's different every single time. Sometimes Eric will call me and tell me to come over because he has a melody idea he wants to work on. Or I'll be fussing around with words. But, I find that most of my lyrics come from situations I find myself in. I usually hit a roadblock with how to pull those lyrics out, but I find that reading, watching movies, and listening to other people's stories helps trigger what I'm looking for.
What are some of your most prominent sonic influences on this new EP?
Jai Paul, Tom Waits, Ennio Morricone, and Jamie XX.
You're a SoCal girl now living in New York. What do you miss most about the West Coast?
IN-N-OUT. Haha, and I guess my family. I was never very in to the relaxed pace of things.
What are some tracks by other artists you currently have on repeat?
“Mystery Girl” - Alexandra Savior
“Aphasia”- Pinegrove
“Terrified” - Childish Gambino (Oooo, that bass line.)
If B.Miles had a superpower, what would it be?
Definitely flying. I once convinced myself that I could fly when I was younger. I ended up with two scars on my knees.
What can we expect from your performance at The Annie O Music Series?
You can expect a Macy Gray cover. I won’t tell you which song, though.
Favorite sugary breakfast cereal?
Reese's Puffs.
