The Standard Soundtrack to 2019

The year is 2019. Here's how it sounded at The Standard...
We’ve arrived at 2019. Picture it: Parasite was in theaters and Billie Eilish’s moody pop sound became the moment. Democracy protests rocked Hong Kong and Donald Trump was impeached—the first time. Boris Johnson’s election victory made Brexit a done deal in the U.K. But on to happier things!

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took us back to the 60s and The Irishman’s CGI de-aging confused us on Netflix. We were listening to Tyler, the Creator and Lizzo’s big breakout. The first batch of Starlink satellites were launched into space and Disney+ debuted at home, making it easier than ever to watch those princesses. Oh, and TikTok. It was everywhere, suddenly, and hasn’t slowed down since.

Tiger Woods staged a huge golf comeback and Liverpool won the Champions League. 90s streetwear came back in a big way, redefining “high fashion” as clean, comfy and casual. Prada pledged to go fur-free and Jacquemus’ lavender field runway show gave us dazzling visuals.

Jeff Koons’
Rabbit set a record for the most expensive work by a living artist, selling for $91 million. Meanwhile, Kara Walker’s monumental fountain at the Tate Modern confronted colonial history.
