Job Title: Chief Engineer
Department: Rooms Department/Engineering
Location: The Standard, High Line
Reporting to: Director of Engineering
Responsible for: Engineering Mechanics, Painters, Coordinators and Supervisors
Job Purpose:
To maintain and supervise the maintenance operations for the Hotel, i.e., refrigeration, heating, plumbing, heating and cooling plant operations, energy controls and efficiency, etc., maintaining standards as required. As the Chief Engineer, you are responsible for the appearance and working order of the property structures, facilities and systems including individual apartments, exterior and common areas. Maintain effective Energy Management and Preventive Maintenance programs and conduct special training for other operating departments on the safe and efficient use of equipment and energy in the hotel. Beyond your vast technical experience with construction, electrical, HVAC,
boilers and mechanical systems and their maintenance and repair, you have a proven proactive, leadership quality.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Provides professional and courteous guest service at all times.
- Supervises maintenance operations for center, including but not limited to refrigeration, heating, plumbing, water treatment, preventative maintenance, Hotel front and back of house spaces, A/C units, ice machines, lighting, kitchen equipment, emergency generators, water softeners, switch rooms, roof exhausts, electrical substations, fire and life safety systems, and other systems and equipment owned, leased or managed by the Hotel.
- Monitors electric, gas, oil and water consumption on a prescribed basis.
- Ensures that all purchased services, electrical, plumbing, cleaning etc. are performed in a manner that exceeds exhibitor and client expectations.
- Supervises assigned associates: hiring, terminations, performance evaluations and development.
- Ensures all projects are completed according to specifications and are completed on time.
- Works closely with Housekeeping/Environmental Services to ensure coordination of activities.
- Coordinates with Security to maintain key inventory for all locks.
- Trains center staff in emergency procedures.
- Aids and instructs craftsmen in scheduling work, ordering material and completing assignments by a specified date.
- Meets with architects to discuss blueprints, contacts contractors to submit bids for new projects, and meets with construction supervisors to discuss difference phases of work.
- Obtains bids and contracts for all items placed under a maintenance agreement as well as landscaping and snow removal contracts.
- Develops and maintains an ongoing maintenance program for guestrooms, meeting rooms, public space back of the house spaces, kitchens and all Hotel equipment.
- Performs inventory and purchasing duties as required.
- Develops department budget.
- Maintains cleanliness of grounds and attractiveness of landscaping.
- Ensures cleanliness and orderliness of all work space and storage areas.
- Acts as Administrator on Duty as required.
- Conducts monthly department meetings.
- Attends weekly staff meetings.
- Complete projects as determined by the General Manager.
- Provide supervision to the engineering team
- Ensure all equipment, public areas, and guest rooms are maintained
- Ensure all maintenance tasks are performed in a timely and professional manner
- Operate and properly maintain various types of electrical, mechanical and plumbing equipment
- Supervise the issuance of tools relating to the Engineering department
- Liaise with contractors and suppliers
- Purchase products for the engineering department
- Ensure that all aspects of the Engineering department follow the laws of Health and Safety
- Maintain a clean and organized shop environment
- Respond to emergency calls and situations
- Ensure safety procedures are understood and followed
Specific Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Must have a valid FSD (Fire Safety Director) license for a commercial building
- A minimum of 2 years managing and leading others including a track record of successful communication, budgeting & negotiating, scheduling and staffing
- At least 5 years experience in Construction, Mechanical, HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing including appliance repair, reading blueprints & power, water and sewer distribution
- Must understand building, mechanical, electrical and plumbing principals
- Three years in a public contact position, preferably in an upscale or lifestyle brand hotel
- Accomplished at delivering world class 5 star customer service and leading others in delivering outstanding customer service
- Proven knowledge & application of codes, laws & regulations pertaining to public buildings and fire including ADA
- Experience operating computer systems for property operations, finance and service tickets
- EPA & OSHA Certifications strongly preferred
- Valid driver’s license
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Customer service oriented
- Ability to work in team and independently
- Excellent organization and communication skills
- Ability to work successfully in a fast paced environment
- Ability to maintain composure in a potentially stressful environment
- Understanding: Ability to read, comprehend and carry out instructions according to established procedures
- Comprehension: Fluent in the English language

- Hygiene and Sanitation: Adherence to uniform, grooming and personal hygiene standards and expectations per Standard of Operating Procedures
- Punctuality: Adherence to posted schedule and arrival time and attendance at mandatory meetings Responsibility: Personal comportment in line with Standard, New York policies, standards, and expectations
- Must have S12 and S13
Desirable:
- Multi-lingual, Spanish Preferred
- Prior work experience in a luxury, lifestyle boutique hotel
- Understand the technologies required in the work you are directly.
- Plan and direct the work of others, either directly or through lower level supervisors.
- Work with a variety of situations.

- React quickly in emergency situations and make decisions that may involve a great amount of money or the safety of others.

Physical Requirements
- Able to work standing for a minimum period of 8 hours a day
- Periodical bending, kneeling, and stretching
- Able to pull, push, carry and lift at least 40 pounds of force

- Able to climb ladders and tolerate heights
