A Standard Guide to the Meatpacking District

Nestled between Chelsea, the West Village and the Hudson River, the Meatpacking District sits on cobblestone streets, bisected by The High Line park.

Still wearing a moniker from the turn of the century industry which filled the brick buildings and spilled into the open-air markets, industrialized meat processing, packing and distribution was what the neighborhood was all about.

Fast forward 60 years, grocery stores have transformed the way meat is bought and sold. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the once-bustling neighborhood fell into decline as industry moved out. Abandoned buildings turned into nightclubs, and the streets became notorious for prostitution and drug-dealing. At the same time, the area became the epicenter of the city's emerging BDSM subculture, with over a dozen sex clubs, including iconic spots like The Anvil, The Manhole, and The Mineshaft.

In the late 1990's the Meatpacking District began it's transformation into New York's most fashionable neighborhood. Welcome to the block Hogs & Heifers, TenJune, Diane Von Furstenberg, Le Bain and The High Line.

Some of these iconic spots are still open and so begins our 2024 guide to the Meatpacking District.
