On the night of the pop-up launch, we sat down with founder Jennifer Zuccarini to chat pushing boundaries & travel top tips...
Who’s the Fleur du Mal muse? Describe her in 3 words.
Powerful, seductive with a dash of mischief.
Fleur du Mal has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of lingerie design. What’s the boldest risk you’ve taken with the brand, and how did it pay off?
I would say taking creative risks in general. We have a strong point of view and we’re not afraid to be provocative. If you try to please everyone you often end up with a flat brand. Ultimately it takes time to build a brand with meaning and lasting impact.
Since launching Fleur du Mal in 2012, how has the industry changed? The biggest change is the shift to social media being important channel to reach and connect with your audience. Facebook acquired Instagram in 2012 and we were posting on IG before we even launched the brand.
Lingerie has truly been a leader in size inclusivity, that’s been a really positive evolution since 2012. In 2012 there were fewer brands in the lingerie space, especially ones more focused on DTC. Many brands have come and gone or changed hands, and some lost their prominence, like VS.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
One piece of advice I think of often is, no matter what challenges come your way, you will get through it. That’s kind of a mantra for me and how I deal with difficult situations. Basically, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
Where do you most like to travel to and why?
Well, I’m very excited for this Ibiza trip since it’s my first time visiting. I’m planning a trip to Japan in the Spring, and Morocco is high on my list. I’m always happy to travel in Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean. I got married on St Baths and always love going back.
What are your travel essentials?
On the plane; water with electrolytes, a stash of dark chocolate, headphones, an eye mask, and my iPad for reading. I always pack our Fleur du Mal 3-way bodysuit, it’s my number one travel style. It works day and night and you can also wear it as a swimsuit or to a light workout.
Finally, you’re heading on a night out in Ibiza, what are you wearing?
Oh, I packed some really fun things- I’m wearing our new Crystal chain fringe dress which is very sparkly and can be layered over anything from a swimsuit to a slip or shorts. It’s an instant party favor.
