The Standard Soundtrack to 2013

The year is 2013. Here's how it sounded at The Standard...

Lucky number 2013. Barack Obama began his second term as President and Pope Benedict XVI became the first pope in nearly 600 years to resign. Edward Snowden made headlines for leaking NSA documents to the media and Nelson Mandela passed away at age 95. The world watched as a civil war in Syria escalated.

12 Years a Slave, Frozen and The Wolf of Wall Street dominated the film conversation while Breaking Bad had its grand finale. House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black cemented Netflix as our go-to spot not just for movies but Peak TV. Twitter went public, Vine had its brief moment in the sun and Bitcoin went mainstream. We were listening to Beyoncé’s susprise self-titled album, Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories and the inescapable sounds of Pharrell’s “Happy.”

At last, a Brit (Andy Murray) won Wimbledon and the Red Sox won the World Series. In fashion, Marc Jacobs said goodbye to Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang said hello to Balenciaga. Art was no stranger to buzz either, with Banksy’s month-long residency in New York left a trail of street pieces we’re still decoding to this day. Meanwhile, we kept it cute at The Standard in NYC, LA and Miami.
