Commissioned by Creative Time, Kara Walker's first large-scale public project entitled: A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby: an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant, is a 35-foot tall sphinx glazed with 160,000 pounds of Domino sugar. It presided over the Creative Time's spring gala, which raised over $1.6 million for the public arts organization.
Go see this magnificent sculpture in one of New York's iconic architectural landmarks, soon to be demolished to make way for waterfront condos. The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, May 10 and runs through July 6, 2014. Hours are Fridays 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 12 to 6 p.m.
Until then, enjoy these party pictures courtesy our friends at Creative Time.
